Portugal Telecom Enhances MEO Mobile Service Using Envivio Mobile TV Encoding Platform
Envivio Mobile Series Encoders Used to Increase Channel Line Up, Expand VOD Offering and Enhance End User Experience
October 27, 2008 - South San Francisco, CA, USA– Envivio Inc., the
leading technology provider of IP video convergence encoding solutions
from mobile to HD, today announced that its Mobile SeriesTM video
encoding platform has been installed by MEO Mobile – the mobile TV
service from the mobile network subsidiary of Portugal Telecom. MEO
Mobile has used the Envivio platform to upgrade and expand its mobile
streaming service, enabling it to deliver 37 channels of high quality
broadcast TV, as well as a wide variety of Video On Demand (VOD)
content.
Portugal Telecom is the dominant mobile network operator in
Portugal with over 6 million subscribers. The MEO Mobile service has
been in operation since mid 2006 and has a large existing subscriber
base which has benefited from the recent service enhancement.
"We are very excited about the future of MEO Mobile. After
operating our service for over two years we can see that demand is
definitely there," said Vera Pinto Pereira, Head of Marketing at
Portugal Telecom. "This new solution from Envivio has improved the
viewing experience for our users by delivering better video quality and
higher service reliability. We are confident that our investment in the
upgrade of our encoding platform will pay back very quickly through
higher levels of service adoption and customer retention."
The MEO Mobile service now delivers 23 live channels and 14
playlist channels, all featuring the National and International news,
sports and entertainment content that subscribers are accustomed to
watching on their home TVs. In addition, Portugal Telecom´s mobile
network provides a VOD service which allows subscribers easy on-demand
access to highlights of popular broadcast programming, as well as
movies and TV shows. All broadcast channels are encoded into
multi-profile streams in real-time using an Envivio 4Caster M2-based
encoding platform protected by a 4Manager M:N automated redundancy
system. All on demand content is created using Envivio 4Coder Mobile SE
offline encoders integrated with a content ingest and playout server.
Local system integration specialists Satcab provided project
management services, ensuring a smooth transition from the previously
used software encoders to the Envivio hardware-based encoding platform.
Tier 1 Mobile TV Encoding Platform
Designed for use by Tier 1 mobile TV service providers, the Envivio
4Caster M2 mobile TV encoder delivers high quality 3GPP encoded video
with up to eight output profiles per channel. Like all 4Caster
encoders, M2 combines a high availability hardware platform with an
embedded software encoding core, providing levels of service
flexibility and performance upgradeability not found in traditional
video compression platforms. As with all Mobile Series™ products from
Envivio, M2 interoperates with all the major streaming servers,
software players and mobile devices commonly used for mobile TV
streaming. M2 can be combined with the Envivio 4Manager headend
management system in an M:N automatic redundancy configuration to
deliver the carrier grade service availability now being demanded by
mobile TV operators.
